AFRICAN ROCK ART
Paintings by Caroline Street.
I admire rock art, it is a glimpse of early African civilization. The art is imaginative and the rock artists have given us a wonderful account of their daily lives. They lived simply from the land; animals were hunted for food and not trophies. The artists captured the most important characteristics of wildlife and the human figures depict movement and energy. There was no paint and paper back then, the artists made use of organic materials such as sand, charcoal and stones. Rocks and caves were their canvas.
My paintings, (shown here) are based on the rock art of the Bushmen people in Africa. I have added a little white here and there to enhance the images. I discovered how talented these artists were by creating my own rock art. I did not sketch the images first, but painted directly onto the canvas as the rock artists would have painted directly onto rocks and cave walls.
